The Hoosier Auditions provide your students with an opportunity to perform in a competitive setting and to receive a written performance evaluation. There are two rounds of the Hoosier Auditions — District and State. In the District round, held during February-April, students perform two or more pieces and take a written/aural theory exam. Students enter a level based on school grade at the time of the District round: Early Elementary Level grades 2-3, Elementary Level grades 4-5, Middle School Level grades 6-7, Junior High Level grades 8-9, High School Level grades 10-12, and College Level under-graduate or ages 18-22.
Students may enter in one or more of the following instrument categories: Strings, Woodwinds, Brass, Percussion, Piano, Voice, Organ, and Classical Guitar. Performance rules for each level are listed on page 10 of the IMTA Directory; however, contestants are not limited to specific repertoire. A list of repertoire performed in recent years is available from your District Chairperson.

Specific dates, times, locations and postmarked entry deadlines, district chair names and addresses, entry form and entry fees for the 2003 Hoosier Auditions are located on pages 7, 14 &15 of the IMTA Directory and on the District Auditions Calendar. The District Map is located on the back cover.

Students of current members of IMTA and non-members are eligible to enter the Hoosier Auditions. A non-member teacher must pay a one-time fee each year of $30, which entitles the teacher to enter as many students as he or she wishes. Each student of a non-member teacher pays an additional $3 to the entry fee.

IMTA does not provide accompanists at the Hoosier Auditions. The District or State Hoosier Auditions chairperson may be able to assist in locating an accompanist if you call far enough in advance. The student’s teacher may accompany him or her during the District round, but not during the State round.

In addition to their performance, students take a written/aural theory test at the District round. Specific theory topics for each level are listed on pages 11-13. There is no theory test for College Level students.

The Hoosier Auditions are limited by the following residency restriction: participation is limited to active members or non-members who reside in Indiana or within a 50-mile radius of the state borders. Students may compete in a district other than their own home district, provided there is a serious reason for doing so. Permission must be granted by petition through the State Chair. Home district is defined as the district in which the teacher resides.

Teachers will claim credit for the achievement of a student only after the completion of six months study with the respective teacher.

Some students may want to participate in the Auditions and receive comments from the judge, but do not wish to compete. These students may declare themselves ineligible to win or place in the competition by checking the "non-competitive status" box on the entry form. Non-competing entrants pay the same fee and are subject to the same requirements as competing entrants, including theory testing. Videotapes will be permitted for critique only in non-competitive auditions.

A student who wins the District round at a particular level but does not win at the State Hoosier Auditions may compete again at the same level the following year if school grade eligibility permits.
