XML in the Classroom
- Kerry Henson, Central Missouri State University
| eXtensible Markup Language (XML) has been trumpeted as the solution to many interoperability problems. While not the most effective way to store data, XML does facilitate sharing data between platforms and between users. It has been embraced by many software tools and is foundational to web services; thus, a knowledge of XML is helpful to students.
This paper will describe software applications and utilities that can be used for including XML in a college course. Although the paper is not intended to be a tutorial on XML, examples will be used when demonstrating use of XML utilities within Internet Explorer, XML parsers and XML with a database (Access and/or SQL Server). Needed software and hardware for these demonstrations will be identified along with available learning resources. |
