At Presbyterian College, as one part of the implementation of new approaches to the traditional liberal arts education, it was determined that all students should achieve competency in three critical areas: writing, speaking, and the use of technology. Electronic portfolios will be used to help students track their progress in these areas over their college careers as well as to demonstrate and document their competencies.
In this presentation we will discuss the planning parameters and expected outcomes for the students’ electronic portfolios and demonstrate the way in which we have used Blackboard to implement a pilot project with 40 students in the 2002-2003 freshman class. In our approach, each student is provided a Blackboard site template for which they are given status of "Course Builder." The template establishes the basic structure for storing and accessing the required materials.
