Knowledge Creation in Higher Education Institutions: A Conceptual model

  • Sam Hijazi, Associate Professor, Florida Keys Community College; Lori Kelly, Assistant Librarian

Higher education institutions and the business world have some difficulty understanding the implication of knowledge management as a new model to support business processes. Knowledge management calls for an organization to share and disseminate its intellectual capital - knowledge. The main challenge lies in not being able to fully answer the question: "What is knowledge?" This paper attempts to define knowledge by introducing a new model that views the various parameters involved in knowledge creation collectively. The model emphasizes the importance of information systems as a major input factor in creating knowledge. Human creativity, innovation, experience and other intangible factors are included. Difference between explicit and tacit knowledge is discussed. Educational institutions and businesses alike can enhance their understanding of knowledge management. Keywords: Data, information, knowledge, knowledge management, information systems, tacit, explicit.
