Saint Xavier University’s (SXU) mission is to provide challenging academic programs to diversely talented students who will engage in a learning community. Unfortunately, faculty have not been supported with the tools or instructional facilities that enable them to explore and adapt emerging methods of pedagogy to actively engage the diverse population of students in more meaningful ways. This was evident from results of the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), which revealed that the university lags behind in implementing active learning and in using educational technology adequately.
SXU is aggressively addressing student engagement issues through faculty development and infusion of technology into the institution’s freshman orientation, seminar course, and clinical practice. This initiative includes the use of Blackboard Content Management System for teaching and learning by faculty and students. Students are now creating electronic portfolios of their academic work, and faculty and students engage in technology-mediated online learning communities. Institutions having similar student engagement issues would be able to explore and adapt tested strategies from SXU.
