Hybrid Classes: Maximizing Student Learning and Institutional Resources

  • Thomas Gould, Chair of the Communications Department, Durham Technical Community College

This presentation examines the effectiveness of hybrid classroom instruction. Hybrid instructional delivery, a combination of traditional classroom and Internet instruction, combines the best features of the classroom and online learning to create an educational environment that promotes both independent and collaborative student learning. This unique format also allows instructors to more readily accomplish course learning objectives than in a course confined to physical classroom space. Furthermore, at a time in higher education when expanding enrollment growth and diminishing resources threaten student access to essential educational opportunity, hybrid classes allow institutions to maximize available resources and to continue to fully serve their student population. Finally, this presentation will provide practical suggestions and strategies for implementing hybrid instruction.
