Past-->Present-->Future: the Place-and Case-for History in the Information Technology Curriculum

  • PK Ebert , Faculty, Macon State; Jacton Opiyo, Faculty, Macon State

Santayana's observation that "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it" (Reason in Common Sense, ch 12) is particularly true in studying Information Technology. Yes, one might object that Santayana was referring to war, not technology. But, war and the threat of war is, after all, what has sparked technological development throughout history—including the development of computer technology. To really understand how and why technology has developed in particular directions, students must understand the social/political forces driving that development. This session will consider ways to integrate discussions of history in the technology classroom. The presenters will share techniques and topics that have worked for them. Audience members will be encouraged to contribute personal suggestions and successes.
