How YOU Say and Write it; How I Say and Write It - Using Technology to Teaching Writing for Global Communication
|
- Janet I. B. Seggern, Lehigh Carbon Community College and Linda Novak
|
We will utilize translation, speech recognition, and handwriting recognition software and PowerPoint slides to convey our experience in combining a business class (business communication) and English class (technical reporting) to facilitate a unit on the topic of global communications.
One of the key resources we use in teaching this combined course is technology that allows students to quickly and effectively create and edit communications targeted at businesses all over the globe. The same technology allows the student to learn and understand nuances of written and oral communication in diverse cultures.
We will cover the ins and outs of implementing a training program for students and faculty as well as present the positive and negative aspects of utilizing the software and technology. Recommendations concerning overcoming communication barriers will be addressed.
Linda Novak will present from the point of view of a faculty member who has been trained on the software. As a competent user of the software, she will cover the success/failure of learning to use the technology and the success/failure in using the technology to meet the objectives of the unit of instruction.
Janet Seggern will demonstrate the software and discuss the necessary hardware, peripheral, and software requirements. She will address speaking ability/clarity and accents/impediments, class preparation, reading/vocabulary, time frame needed for training, typical problems encountered by students, and the success/failure of the training of students and faculty. An analysis of student performance in creating and interpreting global communications will be included.
A question and answer session will end our presentation.
