Over the past few years, the idea of Open Source course management systems has gone from the realms of fantasy to hard reality at a number of schools. Randolph-Macon Woman's College is one of many schools worldwide that have adopted an Open Source system in place of commercial alternatives such as Blackboard and WebCT. There are currently several major contenders in this arena; most of the publicity in the US has gone to the Sakai project, but other systems such as Dokeos/Claroline and Moodle deserve consideration. This session will cover R-MWC's use of Dokeos/Claroline since Fall 2003 as well as pros and cons for moving to an Open Source solution.
