2006 Conference Announcement

In the 6 or so years I have been attending the annual ASCUE conference, I am amazed each year with the amount of value, learning and opportunities for networking I take away from the 5 days I spend with my colleagues and peers.  This year’s conference will be no different, there is so much is in store for you at the 39th Annual ASCUE Summer Conference! This year’s theme is “Maximizing Technology to Enhance Learning.” There is a great variety of interesting presentation proposals that demonstrate the widespread impact of technology on higher education. As always, our members truly make the conference. This year will be no exception as the presentation proposals demonstrate the strength and value of ASCUE – members who are willing to share their learning and expertise with each other at the annual meeting.  This year's keynote speaker is Chuck Dziuban , Director of the Research Initiative for Teaching Effectiveness at the University of Central Florida (UCF)

The Sunday workshops will begin this year’s conference. These workshops will help you grow professionally and provide a hands-on training environment in one of Horry-Georgetown College’s computer classrooms. Learn  how to use Microsoft Producer to create media rich online presentations, as well as how to integrate Wikis, Podcasts and Blogs into classroom instruction.   I strongly encourage you to take advantage of the workshop opportunities because you won’t find better trainings than these.

Other popular events will include the Sunday evening family barbeque, an outing to Broadway at the Beach, an ice cream social, and an evening at the “Evening at Le Grande Cirque”.  There are plenty of fireworks displays: Monday at 10:00PM at Barefoot Landing, Tuesday at 10:00PM at Broadway at the Beach and Wednesday at the Second Avenue Fishing Pier. Shuttle Buses will be available to provide transportation for a trip to Broadway at the Beach. Of course there will still be plenty of chances for learning and sharing “offline” – for renewing old acquaintances, making new friends, or hitting the beach for a swim with family and friends.

Back by popular demand – the Sunday evening menu will include entrees and extras to suit everyone’s taste buds.  A light continental breakfast will be available on Tuesday morning just before the Roundtable discussions. Please remember that Tuesday will be “T-shirt Tuesday”, be sure to wear a shirt representing your school. For the golfing enthusiasts, a golf outing is planned for Thursday afternoon.

Your ASCUE Board is truly devoted to delivering the best conference to date. It has been an honor to work with such a talented group. We will be sure to keep you informed as the process moves along, through the ASCUE listserv and the conference website: http://www.ascue.org.  Additional information about the conference, including registration and travel information is available in the attached conference announcement.

ASCUE 2006 offers a great opportunity for professional development in an environment that is relaxed, friendly, and just plain fun! Join us June 11 – 15 in sunny Myrtle Beach. This year, why not invite a colleague from your institution or bring along the whole family – there is plenty to do and lots of valuable resources to be obtained!
