Although Australia is a relatively young nation, its culture spans over 40,000 years beginning with the Aboriginal people. Since Australia was once under complete British control, people are most familiar with the aspects of the culture that stem from the European influence. It is not simply a culture containing British and Native Australians, though. In fact, over 8 million people reside in Australia today. Its multiculturalism adds to its ever-evolving values, beliefs, customs, and rites. Australian Prime Minister, Paul Keating, stated in 1992 that the Australian identity was experiencing much change in the 1990s, "due to the multicultural reality of our society and the final passing of our colonial past" (Graham 43).
